O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. She was able to make it into the top 100 rounds following the judges' praise for her voice. O'Neil was praised highly from the panel of judges. However, she suffered massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up in the bottom three, followed by the second place. It was a shock to the judges and they advised that the public decide for Melissa who was the contestant with the most impressive vocal abilities. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the third place again. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after two more stunning performances that O'Neil would win of her Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
